The Night of the Hunter was
on the television
and two police cars with
their sirens on were
rushing to help someone,
Russia went into Ukraine
with their tanks
to protect their sphere
of influence and
their missiles were
killing women and
children in the big cities,
once the military chaplain
told us in our
confirmation class
when I was a child that
love was the most
important law of all of them,
in a different war
our citizen soldiers went
to Europe to deal
with a preponderant power,
this time we worry
about a nuclear war
and use sanctions instead,
on the border with Poland
two refugee children
are given an orange
and a green lollipop,
the family probably left
everything they had
except what was in
the sugar bowl or a jar
and the bags that they could carry.
